Philosophy, Politics, Economics & History (PPE)

Philosophy, Politics, Economics & History (PPE) is an interdisciplinary international bachelor programme, which opened doors in 2018. Being strongly linked to Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) in its intellectual development, PPE was designed to integrate multiple IOS disciplines and offer a first-class international interdisciplinary education at Utrecht University. A number of years later, PPE is proud to have opened doors to students from more than 56 nationalities, and to a diverse, motivated and international body of professors, who teach our students daily.

What makes PPE Utrecht unique in the ‘market’ for interdisciplinary programmes in the social sciences and humanities, is that it has originally designed courses for the PPE bachelor, they are truly interdisciplinary in nature, and they are co-thought by colleagues from different combination of disciplines. In this way, students get a basis of each discipline during their first year of study, which is followed by an increasingly interdisciplinary component in the courses they follow in year 2 and year 3 of their studies. PPE Utrecht also provides itself with its emphasis on community and its widely developed extra-curricular programme, which encourages and draws the participation of almost all our students. PPE Utrecht is part of both the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance and is embedded in the School of Liberal Arts

Student association Metis

The student association hosts multiple committees, among which AcadamiCo, SocialCo, DebateCo, SportsCo, MusiCo, and many more. Each year students can join one of the existing committees and organize and participate in events sponsored by them, or they can start one of their own. So far, the student community has featured more than 13 different permanent and seasonal committees. Our student community is also active beyond their committee work, in activism on important global or national issues, or in expressing themselves through various larger art projects. In 2023, multitude of our talented students got together to create the , which they performed in the auditorium to an open audience. This amazing show exhibited that our students have so much talent beyond their academic excellence, which they find different ways to express.

Annual PPE Conference

At PPE Utrecht, in addition to educating new bright minds, we organize an Annual PPE Conference. This is an interdisciplinary conference that aims to attract research by colleagues from near and afar, who work on the cross-roads of some, or all of the disciplines featured in our program. The event takes place in the Spring and has also featured the research of some of our Alumni.
