Can Elitism help us understand democracy? Should Elites play an active role in shaping democracy and society?

We're writing a position paper on the state of democracy through the lens of elites. Specifically if elites are necessary for the survival of democracy or rather if they impede the democratic process. This is an interdisicplinary project with multiple scholars from different disciplines.
