This page outlines the step-by-step process for completing your application to a Master's programme at Utrecht University. Please read this information thoroughly before starting your application.
To be admitted to the Master's programme in Gender Studies with a degree of a University of Applied Sciences, you almost always have to complete a Pre-Master's programme first. Below you will find the required competences to be admitted to the Master's programme and the selection procedure for the Master's programme. Information about the Pre-Master's programme you will find under step 2.
Competencies
This is a selective Master's. You will be considered for admission to the Master's programme Gender Studies if you have a Bachelor’s diploma from a Dutch university (or foreign equivalent) and can demonstrate the following knowledge, insight and skills:
- Knowledge of and insight in genderstudies and its epistemological foundations at Bachelor's level, as shown by having taken at least 30 EC worth of courses in genderstudies and/or postcolonial/ethnicity/cultural studies, with an emphasis on genderstudies. You can have a Bachelor’s diploma in any kind of background, as long as you also have taken at least 30 EC worth of courses related to Gender Studies. If you are unsure whether the courses you have taken are recognized as Gender Studies courses, you may use the ‘relevant courses’ section of your application to explain how the courses you have taken are related to Gender Studies.
- Knowledge of research methods in the field of the humanities and/or social sciences at Bachelor's level. This can be demonstrated by a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences, but also in further practical activities in the field of gender/women’s studies.
- Academic and analytic skills: the ability to design, carry out, and report both in writing and orally on research in the field of gender and postcolonial studies.
- Skills pertaining to independent research at an advanced Bachelor's level and oral and written profiency in English at an advanced level.
Selection procedure
The Admissions Committee decides on your application. On the basis of the documents submitted by you, the committee will assess whether you will be able to succesfully complete the Master’s programme within the nominal duration. The committee also takes into account:
- Motivation and talent.
- Level of required knowledge and the mastery of methods and techniques used in the subject area.
- General high level of professional and intellectual ability.
- Command of the language(s) used in the programme.
An interview or essay may be part of the selection procedure. Alternatively, if you are residing outside the Netherlands, the Admissions Committee may ask for additional written material.
The programme admits a maximum of 40 students each year. If the number of applications exceeds the number of available places, the Admissions Committee will select those candidates who best combine academic achievement, capacity for research and a commitment to social justice. In their overall selection, the committee will also strive for diversity in the student population.

If you do not meet the entry requirements for the Master's programme (see step 1) you might be considered for a Pre-Master's programme. This is for the Admissions Committee to decide. The Pre-Master's programme comprises 30 EC.
Previous education
We offer a Pre-Master's programme for students who have a Bachelor’s degree from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO) in the area of theatre, dance, media, arts and culture.
Whether or not you are eligible for the Pre-Master’s programme depends on the nature of your education and your grade point average. If you are an above-average University of Applied Sciences student, with a study programme that is relevant to the Master’s programme, then register for the Master’s programme and write a letter of motivation.
For the Master in Gender Studies, you need to have:
- A clear interest in the field of Gender Studies and/or Postcolonial Studies.
- A strong motivation to combine academic and professional training in Gender Studies within your study programme, elaborated convincingly in your application letter.

Application procedure Pre-Master's programme
If you want to be considered for a Pre-Master's programme, you simply go through the application procedure for the Master's programme, just like students who meet all entry requirements. The Admissions Committee will decide whether you can follow a Pre-Master's programme and what form it should take. Once you have been notified, you can register for the Pre-Master's programme

All deadlines expire at 23:59 [CET/CEST] on the specified date. You must complete the application process (including submitting your application documents in OSIRIS Online Application and paying the application fee) by this time.

Diploma or graduation statement
A scan of your transcript (including courses, grades and GPA)
Please make sure the document has a stamp and signature of the institute.
Visit Studielink and complete the registration process. You can find all information on how to use Studielink . After completing your Studielink application, you will receive login details for OSIRIS Online Application within 2 working days.
After submitting your application to Studielink, you will receive an email with login details for OSIRIS Online Application. Here you can upload all required documents, check the status of your application and, if applicable, enter contact details of your referee(s).
After you upload all documents in OSIRIS, the Graduate School will evaluate them. We strive to inform you of our decision within 30 working days after the application deadline.
