Function: Postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU)
As a climate scientist I am studying historical and future changes in sea level and the probability of extreme water heights. To do so, I analyze climate model simulations and observations from for instance satellites and tide gauges. I am very interested in both the physical processes causing sea-level change and the impact of sea-level rise on coastal systems. Good examples are my research into the causes of sea-level rise and natural variability in the North Sea and the worldwide decreases in the degree of coastal flood protection due to sea-level rise. I have also co-developed the global, regional and extreme sea-level projections of the most recent IPCC report (WG1, Chapter 9: Oceans, Cryosphere and Sea-Level Change). Currently, I am using a large dataset of climate model simulations to study changes in extreme water levels due to storm surges and heavy precipitation.
