Stef Van Der Hoeven works as assistant professor within the Sport & Society chair of Utrecht University School of Governance (USG). He contributes to education, academic research and organisational consultancy within USG, with an emphasis on research into the social value of the football sector and the impact of societal developments on the football sector.

In the past, Stef worked at Ghent University where he successfully completed a PhD on match-fixing (i.e., the manipulation of sport competitions) on the Olympic Chair Henri de Baillet Latour – Jacques Rogge. During his PhD research he was also the project coordinator of the Erasmus+ sport project . Stef defended his PhD in June 2023 with the dissertation entitled . After completing his PhD, he worked at Sport Vlaanderen, the government agency for sport in Flanders, where he contributed as a policy officer to . As of November 1, 2024, Stef started working at Utrecht University.
