Coating of seeds improves the delivery of pesticides, nutrients, and growth promotors to the plant. Bioactive properties of microbes and their components can be exploited as sustainable and effective alternatives to the use of synthetic chemicals for seed coating. Soil inoculation with selected microbes can promote plant growth and can prime the plant immune system. However, little is known about the ability of microbes on seeds to promote plant health and resistance to stresses and how this is influenced by the plant’s abiotic environment.
