Lukas van den Berge (PhD Utrecht 2016) is assistant professor of legal theory at Utrecht University. He wrote his on the intersection of legal and political theory and administrative justice and published extensively on that theme in various national and international journals. Recently, he published 'Responsief bestuursrecht', a longer essay on the future of administrative law, written on request of the Dutch Association for Administrative Law (VAR).
An in which Van den Berge applies the concept of governmentality to some discussions on Dutch administrative law was recognised by the Dutch Lawyers' Association (NJV) as one of the three best articles on Dutch law published in 2017 and 2018. For his work on 'responsive administrative law' and a series of articles on the Dutch childcare benefits scandal (see, e.g., here, here and here), he received an honorable mention (second place) for the VAR-Michiel Scheltema Prijs, awarded every four years in recognition of scholarly work that is thought to be of particular significance to the development of Dutch administrative law.
In addition, Van den Berge's research concentrates on the analysis of key legal concepts from the perspectives of legal and political philosophy and intellectual history. Current legal debates and pressing societal challenges usually serve as a point of departure. Recent work, for instance, includes publications on the '' (2023) and the origins and future of (2023) in the light of the current climate crisis and other environmental challenges.
Previous work includes articles on the boundaries of law in (2023), in times of upcoming populism and political illiberalism (2022), the reception of the ancient concepts of in modern legal theory (2022), in times of Covid-19 (2020), the legal philosophies of (2019), the intellectual history and future of the concept of (2018), the history and future of the (2018) and the jurisprudence of (2017).
Sinds September 2023, Lukas van den Berge is board member of the Utrecht Law College. He is also chair of Utrecht University's Central Electorial Office and editor of the .
As a lecturer, Lukas van den Berge is involved in various courses on bachelor's and master's level. In 2022, the students of Utrecht Law School designated him as the 'lecturer of the year'. In 2024, he became Utrecht University's .
