I am Professor and Chair of Media Heritage, Technology and Culture in the Department of Media and Culture (MCW) and Director of Research for MCW at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON).

Before joining Utrecht University, I was Chief Curator (2009–2024) and Director of Collection & Knowledge Sharing (2023–2024) at Eye Filmmuseum, where I worked since 1997. I also served as Professor and Chair of Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam (2013–2024), where I taught in the MA Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image program since its inception in 2003.

My research focuses on film restoration, digitization, and the theory of film archival practice, with a recent emphasis on developing more global and sustainable approaches to film preservation. I was the principal investigator of and am currently co-investigator of . Together with Floris Paalman, I coordinate the inter-institutional research group .

In 2014, I initiated the , a collaboration between Eye Filmmuseum, the University of Amsterdam, and Utrecht University. Now in its tenth edition, the conference has become a leading event bridging academic research with audiovisual archival and curatorial practice. I am a member of its steering committee. In 2022, I played a key role in establishing the , a biennial traveling event with an advisory board of 20 academics, archivists, and curators from across all continents, of which I am a board member.

In recognition of my contributions to film preservation and research, I was invited in 2022 to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars) as one of the few members representing the field of film heritage.

Publication Highlights

I am the author of (2009; revised edition 2018), which has been translated into Spanish and Italian, and co-author of (2015, with Tom Gunning, Joshua Yumibe, and Jonathon Rosen). My other publications include (2016, co-edited with Annie van den Oever),  (2018, co-edited), and the special issue Activating the Archive for The Moving Image journal (2021, co-edited with Floris Paalman and Eef Masson). I also published the position statement (NECSUS, 2021).
