David Snetselaar MA

PhD Candidate
History of International Relations

David Snetselaar is a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Conflict Studies (Utrecht University) and the War Studies Research Centre (Netherlands Defense Academy), studying the recent shifts in European perceptions of war and insecurity. His current research focusses on how concerns over hybrid threats amid the intensifying geopolitical rivalry are shaping security policies and practices in new policy areas such as knowledge security and economic security. To govern security in these areas, European governments are increasingly focused on ‘assembling’ societal resilience. Efforts to improve resilience require the cooperation of a multiplicity of actors each with their own perspective on what security entails in a particular context, how it should be achieved, by whom, and at what costs. Specifically, David is studying the governing of security in the context of international research collaborations, the rollout of 5G telecommunication networks, and the protection of ports as critical infrastructure. David’s research has been published in (2023), (2022), and the (2022).

Previously David worked as an Assistant Research Fellow at the Centre for Global Challenges. Together with Dr. Lauren Gould, he conducted research on the International Anti-IS Coalition as part of the Intimacies of Remote Warfare project. Their research was published in the edited volume (2020).

Research interests include: hybrid threats, knowledge security, economic security, resilience, assemblage (theory), security governance, emerging technology, Science and Technology Studies, and remote warfare.
