Carl is an Assistant Professor in Urban (In)justice at the Human Geography and Spatial Planning Department of Utrecht University. Carl uses feminist and queer perspectives on urban geographies to ask how vulnerabilities and care are co-constituted by economic and social conditions, violent encounters and digital technologies and the ways these are negotiated and contested by marginalised people in their urban lives. My research and teaching are focused on the following areas:
- Embodied and emotional approaches to digital geographies, exploring how people are learning to live with digital platforms and technologies, including dating apps, social media, smartphones and digital data.
- The geographies of genders and sexualities, including LGBTQ+ experiences, spaces and equalities.
- Changing geographies of masculinities, and contemporary issues around men and emotion, care and work.
Inequality, marginalisation and power are key themes in my research exploring the politics of embodied feeling and sensation.
