Maria Forcellino is affiliated researcher at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON) at Utrecht University (since 2018). She has been Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Salerno (1996-2010) and fellow at the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome (KNIR, 2015-2017).
Her research focuses on two subjects: Renaissance Studies, particularly the figures of Michelangelo (Michelangelo, Vittoria Colonna e gli 芦 spirituali 禄. Religiosit脿 e vita artistica a Roma negli anni Quaranta, Roma : Viella 2009; Adriano VI, Michelangelo e la 芦S.ta memoria de Julio禄, Atti del convegno internazionale 鈥淚l papato breve di Adriano VI. Storia, Religione, Arte, Cultura鈥�, Roma nel Rinascimento, 2024, pp. 139-157) and Leonardo (with Roberto Antonelli, Claudia Cieri Via, and Antonio Forcellino, Leonardo a Roma. Influenze ed eredit脿, catalogo della Mostra (Roma, Villa Farnesina, 3 ottobre 2019 - 12 gennaio 2020), Bardi Edizioni 2019); and the Eighteenth Century, mainly the discovery of antiquity in Hercolaneum and Pompei (Camillo Paderni Romano e l`immagine storia degli Scavi di Pompei, Ercolano e Stabia, Roma : Artemide Edizioni 1999) and the Grand Tour (Fra Roma e Napoli: il viaggio di Johan Meerman in Italia nel 1775-1776, in Maria Forcellino (a cura di), Studi in onore di Joselita Raspi Serra, Quasar 2008; A Dutchman in Venice - Johan Meerman and his Grand Tour of Italy, 鈥淎rtibus et Historiae鈥�, 78 (2018). At present she is preparing a monography on the Grand Tour of Johan Meerman in Rome (1775-1776) and Naples (1776). It is a two-language publication, a transcription of Meerman鈥檚 text and its Italian translation forthcoming in spring 2025 (Quasar Edizioni).
In the last years she has been devoted to the study of Leonardo da Vinci鈥檚 visit to Rome between 1513 and 1516, starting from the celebration of the 500th Leonardo Da Vinci death year (1519-2019).
