Jojanneke van der Toorn studeerde af in de Arbeids & Organisatiepsychologie (2003) en Culturele Antropologie (2005; Cum Laude) aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam. Vervolgens promoveerde ze in 2010 bij de afdeling Sociale Psychologie aan New York University. Haar dissertatie betrof het effect van afhankelijkheid op de legitimering van autoriteit. Na als postdoc aan Yale University (2010-2012) en als universitair docent aan de Universiteit Leiden (2012-2016) verbonden te zijn geweest, werkt zij momenteel als universitair hoofddocent aan de ÀÖÓãºǫ́. Ook is zij als hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden verbonden met de bijzondere leerstoel “LGBT+ Workplace Inclusion"
