On March 13, Belle and Jenny gave a workshop entitled “Be the change you want to see: How being authentic can improve academic culture at TU/e”. The workshop was organized by the Women in Science Eindhoven (WISE) network. The event attracted a diverse group of people, from PhD students to professors, HR directors and vice-deans. During the workshop, participants were presented with research and data (incl. their own based on a survey administered prior to the workshop) demonstrating that the traditional culture of academia is focused on competition and individual achievements. But, many (and especially early-career) academics experience a lack of belonging and authenticity in this culture and want a stronger focus on collaboration and group achievements. Participants were invited to think about the kind of academic they want to be, what their sphere of influence is, and how they can contribute to change in the academic work culture . Every participant left the workshop with one concrete and doable action that they can do to contribute to a more inclusive and effective academic work climate.
