University College Utrecht to Stay on Current Campus

The decision has been made by the Executive Board of Utrecht University to retain the International Campus that is home to University College Utrecht.

This decision has been made in the context of the Strategic Housing Plan, which aims to develop a sustainable financial policy to simplify and reorganize Utrecht University鈥檚 real estate portfolio by refocusing efforts on a smaller number of projects.

In 2019, the Executive Board announced plans to sell the International Campus site and since then, careful research has been carried out to assess the feasibility of the sale from the financial and educational point of view. The research showed that retaining the International Campus is financially feasible if the usage of the space available is optimised.

University College Utrecht has enjoyed its connection with the campus since the College was established over 25 years ago, and indeed for many of the staff, students and alumni, the campus has been the basis of the identity of the College; a tightly knit inclusive and stimulating community, international by default, that lives and learns together within these buildings.

鈥淚 am excited that the campus from which we derive a large part of our identity, from which our students, alumni and staff have fond memories and on which our residential concept is based, will be preserved. said Sjoerd Bosgra, Managing Director of UCU. "Despite the challenges that UCU faces, I see a bright future,鈥

Daan Reijnders 鈥17, alumnus and member of the UCU relocation working group, reflected on the importance of the decision: 鈥淎n important part of UCU's success is its vibrant, cohesive community, which is significantly shaped by the physical campus itself. The current grounds provide diverse spaces for students and staff to gather, while naturally encouraging unexpected interactions and allowing the community to creatively use both indoor and outdoor areas 鈥 qualities the community has thoughtfully built upon over the years.

Staff, students, and alumni recognized the substantial challenge of recreating these valuable campus dynamics in the proposed relocation plans. As an alumni representative in the relocation committee, I'm pleased that the UCU community can continue to enjoy and benefit from this special place in the years ahead.鈥

We are glad that we have the opportunity to educate future generations of students in the same setting, and to continue nurturing the community that has grown and flourished on this campus.
