Students as teachers: How does that work at other universities?

Students are increasingly providing teaching activities at higher education institutions. Using these Students as Teachers (or SATs) can be of great added value for the educational organisation, provided they are well prepared and have defined tasks. The Student Qualification Education (StuKO) project mapped the success factors, and produced a booklet with inspiring examples of how SATs from different educational institutions are supervised and trained.
Colleagues in higher education who already work with SATs share their experience in the inspiration book. You will read what role the SATs play, what training and guidance they receive, how the programme is set up and what effects this has on the students taking the courses and on the SATs themselves. You will also find tips and focus points.
It is amazing to read about the multitude of roles that SATs fulfil: they are teachers, mentors, cutting room supervisors, PBL supervisors, instructors, tutors, coaches, and sometimes advisors to teachers and designers of education. The examples in the inspiration book show the different ways in which these students are trained and supervised.
What is StuKO?
StuKO is a national project in which higher education institutions work together on training, guidance, recognition and appreciation of students teaching at their own institutions. The project builds a network around this topic, gathers and shares knowledge, designs training and guidance and works towards a nationally recognised certification: the StuKO stamp. Utrecht University is the project's pen leader. View the .
