Renovation of Drift 21 started

A more accessible and sustainable building

Drift 21 is being renovated. On 2 April, Margot van der Starre, vice president of the 乐鱼后台 Executive Board, signed the order for the contractor Schakel & Schrale. This large-scale renovation will make the national monument future-proof.

Improved accessibility and sustainable innovations

During the renovation, Drift 21 will be made more accessible for everyone. An extra stairwell with a lift will make the entire building accessible. There will also be more workspaces for study associations. In addition, various sustainability measures will be taken, including vacuum glazing, roof and wall insulation and the installation of an energy-efficient climate system. The interior and exterior will also receive a thorough overhaul to ensure that the building meets the requirements of the future. OOK Architects is responsible for designing the renovation with an eye for accessibility, sustainability and preservation of historical value.

The university in the city centre

The renovation of Drift 21 is part of the wider programme focusing on modernising and making university buildings in the city centre more sustainable. Future renovations and redevelopment of Janskerkhof 13/13a and the Anna Maria van Schurman building are examples.

Planning and implementation

Together with contractor Schakel & Schrale, the planning has been worked out. Work has started and, according to the preliminary planning, will last until 1 June 2026. This project marks an important step in the future-proof accommodation of Utrecht University in the city centre.
