Pussy Riot in TivoliVredenburg for exclusive dialogue with Rosi Braidotti

On Monday, 31 October, members of the Russian activist punk band Pussy Riot will come to the main auditorium at TivoliVredenburg. Maria Alyokhina and Sasha Bogino will talk with Utrecht University Prof. , who specialises in issues such as activism, the influence of the media and the power of art. The event is part of a series of debates and lectures on social issues organised in cooperation with TivoliVredenburg, including the Betweter Science Festival and the popular Science Cafe.
The Pussy Riot collective and some of its better known members have become global icons over the last few years. As activists, media artists and public intellectuals, they have struck out against despotism, censorship and patriarchal oppression with all their might. Following the incarceration of some of the collective members in Putin鈥檚 security regime, their resistance and vocal criticism of that system, Pussy Riot have set the ethical standards for basic freedom, respect of the rule of Law, women鈥檚 and LBGTQ鈥檚 rights and critical citizenship.

Following their release from jail, they intensified their critical stance and have acquired high media recognition, turning such visibility to savvy political use and purpose. Commercial success and iconic media status also followed and the Pussy Riot project by now raises crucial questions about the relationship between activism and the establishment, interrogating the fine line between radical content and the use of performance, the multi-layered power of media and the force of art.
Prof. Braidotti will address these issues during the discussion on Monday, 31 October. Rosi Braidotti is an internationally renowned philosopher, university professor and founder of the Centre for the Humanities at Utrecht University.
