Patrizia Zanoni appointed as professor in Organization Studies

Patrizia Zanoni

From 1 February 2018 Patrizia Zanoni has been appointed as professor in Organization Studies at the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG). Within USG, she will be the leading scholar in USG’s core theme Organizational Culture & Change, in the section Organization & Management Studies. Patrizia will combine this position with her chair at Hasselt University.

‘We are convinced that Patrizia will make a significant contribution to the further development of the section Organization Sciences at USG. We are therefore delighted to congratulate and welcome her and look forward to the start of her professorship’ said Maarten van Bottenburg and Mirko Noordegraaf of the USG Board.

Social identities and symbolic and economic power in organizations

Since 2013, Patrizia is appointed as professor at Hasselt University. She also was visiting professor at Radboud University Nijmegen, Northwestern University, University of Massachusetts, University of Graz and Lund University. She holds master’s degrees in International and Diplomatic Sciences (University of Trieste) and Social and Cultural Anthropology (KU Leuven) and got her PhD in 2006 in Applied Economic Sciences at KU Leuven with a thesis entitled Beyond demography: Essays on diversity in organizations. In 2007, she received the Best PhD Dissertation Award of the Critical Management Studies Interest Group of the Academy of Management.

Her scholarly work on diversity draws on critically oriented theoretical traditions including critical discourse analysis and neo-Marxist theory. Specifically, she theorizes and empirically investigates  the role of social identities (e.g. gender, ethnicity, disability, and age) in struggles over symbolic and economic power within and across organizations.

Patrizia published her work in journals including Organization, Organization Studies, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Journal of World Business and Culture and Organization. She is associate editor of Organization, editorial board member of British Journal of Management, a member of the board of the International Critical Management Studies Association, and a member of the executive team of the Critical Management Studies Division of the Academy of Management (2017-2022).

Scientific advisor for a range of organisations

Next to her research and teaching, Patrizia regularly acts as a scientific advisor in policy committees and projects whose aim is to foster equality in companies, public administration bodies, interest organizations, schools and universities.
