New research: ethical leadership to combat abuse in international sports governance?

The last few weeks hundreds of thousands of Dutch people enjoyed Max Verstappen in his car, Steven Kruijswijk on his bike and Kiki Bertens on the clay court. The coming weeks more people will consume elite sport. Millions are looking forward to the European Football Championships, the European Athletics Championships and the Olympics. There's nothing wrong with that. But in the production of sports many things go wrong, especially in sport governance. How can these abuses be combatted?

argues in a (in Dutch) that ethical leadership is crucial. At the same time: very little is known about this ethical leadership in sports organizations. Therefore, a research group from the focus area starts a study into the actions of Dutch football directors in moral dilemmas. In this way, they will gain insight into the discursive construction of integrity.

The insights from this research will form the starting point to search - together with sports directors – for tools that help them to take action towards their international federations. Tools that, despite the unique context of the sports sector, might be useful for directors in other sectors that struggle with the question how to raise attention to international abuses in their industry.
