Maarten van Bottenburg accepts Francqui Chair at VU Brussel

Professor Maarten van Bottenburg, coordinator of Sport & Society, has accepted the prestigious Francqui Chair at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He held his inaugural speech in Brussels last Thursday.  

The Francqui Chair was established in 1932 to stimulate higher education and academic research in Belgium. Each year the Francqui Foundation appoints two professors to lecture about their current research at Belgium universities. Van Bottenburg kicked off with a public lecture called: Homo ludens revisited: About the meaning of sport in contemporary culture. He elaborated about the current state of sport, including corresponding problems, from use of doping to sexual harassment.
