Dialogue 6: Academic Freedom & Social Media: Friend or Foe?
Openness Challenged: university at risk? The Academic Freedom Series
Date to be confirmed
The second dialogue in the Academic Freedom Series examines the role of social media in relation to academic freedom as a democratic value and right.
Universities as core institutions of open societies wish to engage with society. Social media play a growing role in communicating research results to society at large. However, social media is also often described as the most dependence creating phenomenon in the (post-)modern society.
In relation to academia the use of social media brings a host of questions with it such as: How is, can, and should social media be used by academics? What are the risks associated with its use in academia? Should social media engagement be part of the career assessment of academic staff? What does responsible use of social media in academia look like? What are the boundaries and where do academic freedom and freedom of expression interfere?
Ultimately, these individual questions lead to the bigger question central in this dialogue: academic freedom and social media: friends or foes?
