Can you have a performance review with AI?

We use algorithms to navigate quickly from A to B, to stay in touch with our friends, and to determine what we will be eating tonight. In short, data analysis and algorithms are increasingly part of our lives. Organizations are also increasingly using algorithms. But how do you control whether AI continues to do its job properly? Just like with a human, can you have a performance review with AI? And following on from that, how can supervisors deal with the increasing use of AI in the organizations they supervise? These are the questions that a new research consortium within the 乐鱼后台 AI & Media Lab is working on.

Algorithms enable us to perform tasks faster, more efficiently and sometimes even better. Sometimes organizations deploy an algorithm that learns to recognize patterns on its own and can support or even make decisions.

AI is not value-free

"But AI is not value-free," explains project leader Iris Muis of the Utrecht Data School, "as is the case with other Big Data techniques. It can affect public values, such as transparency, privacy and trust, but also strengthen them. Of course, we want organizations to use AI that strengthens our free and democratic society, and does not erode those values or affect us in our human rights."

Artificial Intelligence can affect public values such as transparency, privacy and trust, but also strengthen them.

Supervisors and AI

The consortium Supervisors and AI within the 乐鱼后台 AI & Media Lab will deal with this very issue. Muis: "Supervisors traditionally keep an overview of what organizations do in the Netherlands, and check whether they comply with the applicable laws and regulations. The organizations they have to monitor are increasingly using AI. This is causing supervisors to have to specialize in new forms of control: namely, supervision of the responsible use of AI. How can they monitor whether AI is being used responsibly? And how might they themselves use AI to perform their legal duties more efficiently?"

Utrecht University and AI

Utrecht University recognizes the importance of further developing knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). To date, it has done so through the Human-centered Artificial Intelligence focus area and the AI labs, among others. By collaborating on research and education, we increase the focus on social issues, generate new state-of-the-art knowledge and applications for specific domains, and contribute to a better connection between education and professional practice.
