Call for participants: Public Engagement Academy 2025

Utrecht University is a strong proponent of public engagement: connecting science to society through a broad range of activities, like science festivals for various ages, dialogues with public library visitors, and activities at the University Museum Utrecht. As part of a broader initiative to further develop public engagement practice within the Faculty of Science, the second edition of the Public Engagement Academy will take place this year: a public engagement training programme specifically targeted at postdocs and other early-career researchers (PhD candidates and assistant professors) at the Faculty of Science.

The programme consists of ten sessions, in which participants will receive theory and practical training in a variety of public engagement skills, including popular-scientific writing, media training, pitching, storytelling, dialogue training, a dedicated career skills session, and more. Participants will directly apply these skills by developing a public engagement activity (alone or in groups of two) during guided working sessions.

The PE Academy will give participants broad foundational skills in all aspects of public engagement, and guidance in how to use these skills in their career. They will also broaden their network within the faculty and university, including researchers and other staff (e.g. communications, HR, RSO, faculty board).

As a participant of the first iteration of the Public Engagement Academy, I have first-hand knowledge of the exceptional opportunities provided by this program! Throughout the year, we participated in a wide array of workshops geared towards teaching us about the importance of science outreach, how to design our own public engagement project, and how to communicate effectively with members of the surrounding community.

PhD candidates, postdocs and assistant professors at the Faculty of Science can apply for this programme before 23 May 2025. More information about conditions and application can be found on intranet.
