3Rs Centre Utrecht launches the Basement Membrane Extract-free Database
The 3Rs Centre Utrecht has launched a new resource to support animal-free innovation in biomedical research: the Basement Membrane Extract-free Database. This freely accessible database offers curated alternatives to animal-derived Basement Membrane Extract (BME), helping researchers to reduce animal use in cell culture and organoid research.
Researchers can explore a wide range of defined, animal-free matrices that support cell growth and differentiation in both 2D and 3D models. The database aims to support the shift toward more ethical, reproducible, and sustainable research methods.
BME, such as Matrigel, has been used for over 40 years in in vitro models to mimic the extracellular environment. Derived from mouse tumours, BME provides a complex but variable mix of proteins that support cellular functions. However, its animal origin raises ethical concerns and poses challenges in standardization, reproducibility, and batch-to-batch variability.
To raise awareness of these limitations and promote the use of animal-free alternatives, the 3Rs Centre will launch a weekly LinkedIn campaign starting 6th of May. This campaign will spotlight key reasons to make the switch to defined, non-animal matrices.
