President Trump has been able to write what he wanted on Twitter for years, until the platform posted a fact check link below a recent tweet. According to Twitter, the tweet affected voting behavior and that violates the guidelines of the website. Prof José van Dijck spoke in De Volkskrant and on NOS.nl about Trump's special position on Twitter.

More freedom than others

According to Van Dijck, Trump has more freedom on Twitter than others. For example, the platform previously deleted tweets from other presidents about unproven corona drugs. But Trump was allowed to suggest that the intake of hydroxychloroquine might help against corona.

Twitter's biggest star

If Twitter isn't afraid to correct other big leaders, why does Trump not get the same treatment? "Trump is Twitter's biggest star," Van Dijck explains. "They need each other. But now Trump has gone too far. That is why he is now being reprimanded, but he probably won't care much about the repercussions."
