How did medieval societies use the letter and who were among its users? On 12 and 13 June, the NWO VIDI project will host the workshop ‘Processes of Epistolary Communication in the Middle Ages’. This two-day workshop aims to foster conversation between scholars who work on Latin, Greek and Arabic letters in the Mediterranean world between c. 400 and 1000 CE.

Medieval epistolary communication

This workshop brings together experts on the Latin, Greek and Arabic letter. In seven thematic sessions, they will explore the diverse actions and actors involved in medieval epistolary communication, from letter-carriers crossing the Mediterranean as diplomats to letters being eaten for healing purposes.
