Mark your calendars for the next S4S Café: 'Gaming for Sustainability' on 24th of June. We will dive into the world of serious gaming and learn more about games that create awareness in the field of sustainability. This event will feature four pitches that highlight innovative games designed to educate and inspire action towards a more sustainable future.
The four invited speakers:
Thomas Hartman – Designing a catalysis & chemistry game
Thomas Hartman will present a game designed for third-year bachelor Chemistry students as part of their Catalysis course. In this game, students take on the role of scientists on an intergalactic mission to a new planet. When their water tank gets damaged, they must improve their water recycling system using catalysis to convert exhaled CO2 with H2 into methane (CH4) and water (H2O). This immersive experience not only teaches important theories and concepts of catalysis and chemistry but also emphasizes the significance of limited resources and circular economy, also on Earth.
Thomas will share his insights into the game's development process and the collaborative lessons learned from working with serious game developers. And, you can play the game yourself during the event!
Claudia Wieners – Developing a game on climate policy and decision-making around solar geoengineering versus proper mitigation
Claudia Wieners will discuss a game focused on challenging decision-making surrounding solar geoengineering versus proper mitigation. This game delves into the complexities of climate policy, highlighting the trade-offs between quick but potentially risky solutions and sustainable long-term strategies.
Laura van der Lubbe - Interactive Stories in Serious Gaming
Laura van der Lubbe will share her experiences with serious gaming and the use of interactive stories. She will discuss how creating a serious game can be challenging but rewarding, and how interactive stories can serve as a more accessible starting point for game design. Laura aims to inspire the audience to think about different approaches to make interactive stories work for their projects, highlighting the potential of this medium to engage and educate on sustainability topics.
Sander van Egmond - CO2 Reduction Game
Sander van Egmond from Infinito Design will introduce the Carbon Reduction Game. This team-based game challenges the players to tackle industrial CO2 reduction by investing in various CO2 reduction options and bidding on CO2 certificates within an uncertain climate policy landscape. It offers a dynamic learning experience where the players must balance profitability with environmental responsibility, make strategic decisions under uncertainty, and master CO2 auction dynamics.
