Lecture Andreja Novakovic: Housework in Beauvoir, Federici, and Akerman
Doing Gender Lecture Series

On Wednesday 7 May, (University of California, Berkeley) will give the next lecture in the Doing Gender Lecture Series, organised by the (NOG). In ‘On the Endless Repetition of Housework in Beauvoir, Federici, and Akerman’, Novakovic will compare Simone de Beauvoir’s description of housework with the conceptions of Silvia Federici and Chantal Akerman, who presented it in a more positive light.
Housework
Simone de Beauvoir famously described housework as a kind of torment. Novakovic will compare her account of housework with Silvia Federici’s manifesto Wages against Housework and Chantal Akerman’s film Jeanne Dielman. Although Federici and Akerman shared some of Beauvoir’s ambivalence toward housework as a way of life, their aim was to make housework visible and to show its neglected significance.
This special edition of the Doing Gender Lecture Series is co-organised with the Platform Gender, Diversity and Global Justice and deviates from the 2024-2025 Doing Gender Lecture Series theme.
