Conversations about difficult and sensitive topics

Please note: This workshop consists of two separate sessions, on 28 May and 11 June. You can only participate if you can attend both sessions. You must therefore select both sessions when registering.

The spoken language of this workshops is dependent on the participants.

Target group

This workshop is aimed at teachers who want to be better prepared for conversations and discussions in their classrooms about difficult and sensitive topics. Who want to know what they themselves can and cannot handle and how to better deal with situations they find difficult.

Focus of the workshop

In this workshop, teachers learn how to initiate and guide conversations about difficult and sensitive topics in their classrooms. We make a lot of room for introducing your own cases and for practising, experiencing and reflecting. We connect to questions and learning needs from the group and pay attention to at least:

  • the difference between tension and insecurity: safe and brave spaces;
  • conflict as opportunity: hearing all voices;
  • connecting communication with an eye for:
    • what is going on inside yourself;
    • the group as a whole;
    • the individuals in the group.

Upon completion of the workshop, teachers will be able to:

  • initiate and guide conversations about difficult and sensitive topics in their classrooms;
  • use conflict as an opportunity for student learning;
  • communicate in a connecting way with consideration for themselves, the group as a whole and the individuals in the group;
  • reflect on how they can and want to play their role in conversations about difficult and sensitive topics.
